The Vocabulary Attuned Educator

Description: The vocabulary attuned educator recognizes the contribution of word meaning to comprehension and the multi-faceted nature of acquisition. Designing effective instruction requires an understanding of the nature of vocabulary, dimensions of word meaning and evidenced based instructional principles and practices. Join this interactive webinar to explore critical understandings and an informed framework for intentional and incidental instruction. Learn about strategies and activities applicable to the varied instructional settings.

Nancy Hennessy, educational consultant and past president of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), is an experienced teacher and administrator. She has consulted on varied topics ranging from professional learning to proficient reading and writing. Nancy has also designed and delivered keynote addresses, workshops and training to educators nationally and internationally. She co-authored Module 6 of LETRS, Digging for Meaning: Teaching Text Comprehension (2nd edition) with Louisa Moats and was a national trainer for Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). Additionally, she has written the chapter, Working with Word Meaning: Vocabulary Instruction, in Multisensory Teaching of Basic Skills (4th edition in press). Nancy is an honorary member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the recipient of the North Carolina Branch of International Dyslexia Association’s June Lyday Orton Award 2012 and the International Dyslexia Association’s Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Shannon Kuschel, MS, LPC, PCET
Shannon Kuschel is the Research and Development Coordinator for NILD, as well as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Psychology & Counseling at Regent University. She has spent more than twenty years working with children, their families, and schools specializing in ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences, as well as trauma and grief recovery. She has worked as a School Counselor and Principal of Christian Schools in Florida and Virginia. Currently she also provides consultation services to schools on a variety of topics.  Her passion is to help all children learn to their potential so that they may walk confidently into their futures and life callings for the glory of God.

She has earned a Master of Science degree in Psychology from Palm Beach Atlantic University, is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia, and a Certified Educational Therapist.  She is currently a doctoral student at Regent University, pursuing a Ph. D. in Education with concentrations in Educational Psychology & Special Education. Shannon has a passion for interdisciplinary research in the fields of neuroscience and education.
