Discovery Therapist

Position Summary
The Discovery Therapist assists students with learning difficulties, including both diagnosed and undiagnosed SLDs, through cognitive therapy techniques.
Eden’s Discovery program follows the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD) model, a specialized educational therapy program designed for students with learning differences.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Distribute and manage checklists from teachers to determine the need for intervention.

    • If intervention is warranted, contact parents to explain the Discovery Program and testing procedure, send the Discovery Application, and schedule, administer, grade, and analyze test results.

  • Link deficits and weaknesses to NILD techniques, determine needed accommodations and modifications, and formulate short- and long-term cognitive educational therapy plans.

  • Create an Accommodations and Modifications Chart for each student and meet individually with classroom teacher(s) to explain, assist, and answer questions.

  • Construct, maintain, and update long-term plans and daily records of academic, perceptual, behavioral, and emotional progress, as well as additional identified needs.

  • Collaborate with classroom teacher(s) to maximize student progress and manage accommodations and modifications.

    • Assist with tests, assignments, and instructional strategies.

    • Present prescribed methods to address behavioral or academic needs identified by the teacher(s).

  • Communicate and hold conferences as needed with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators.

  • Monitor and revise Accommodation and Modification Charts and short- and long-term goals as needed to promote student independence.

  • Report yearly student progress and provide the Director of Discovery Administration with requested reports.

  • Complete all requirements to renew and maintain current NILD certification each year and report these activities to the Discovery Administrator.

  • Meet with the Discovery Administrator throughout the first year for proper Discovery training.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Move about classrooms, hallways, gymnasium, and outdoor areas.

  • Climb stairs to reach classrooms/offices on higher floors at all campuses.

Qualifications

  • Mature relationship with Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior; active in an evangelical church.

  • Supportive of the school’s mission and doctrinal statements; serves as a role model to students.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Willingness to obtain NILD certification.

  • Acceptable PA DOE employment clearances dated within one year:

    • FBI Fingerprint / Act 114 Federal Criminal Background Check (Identogo Service Code 1KG6TR)

    • Act 151 State Child Abuse Background Report

    • Act 34 PA State Police Background Clearance

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Google Docs, and Sheets.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish relationships with parents, students, and staff.

  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to handle multiple demands.

  • Detail-oriented and organized.

  • Self-starter with initiative and the ability to think ahead and work independently.

  • Professional appearance and behavior.
