Transitioning from Additive to Multiplicative Reasoning: Build Mathematical Understanding That Students Need for Fractions and Proportions
When students with a math LD or dyscalculia freeze at the stage of using addition as their default reasoning strategy, they face a significant barrier to higher-level mathematics. Without a structural leap from additive to multiplicative thinking, concepts like fractions, ratios, and proportions remain a huge stumbling block. While foundational practice using balance tasks, math squares, and fluency games supports many students, those with persistent math learning disabilities require targeted structural shifts to bridge this critical gap. Designed specifically for educational therapists, this webinar will focus on how to use additional hands-on materials and instructional methods to help these students make progress. We will demonstrate advanced visual models and organizers that can structure their problem solving and give examples of games that will develop your students’ mathematical reasoning.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify struggling learners, who remain using counting-on strategies and provide them with effective strategies to step into multiplicative reasoning.
- Use advanced concrete-representational tools to anchor multiplicative relationships and unitizing concepts.
- Implement visual organizers and structural templates directly into your sessions to anchor multi-step mathematical reasoning.
About Your Speaker
Dr. Anneke Schreuder
Dr. Anneke Schreuder is a Dutch pediatrician and neonatologist, with a particular interest in the field of developmental epidemiology.
Her daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia. This brought her deeper into the world of learning disabilities. For several years, she worked as a dyslexia tester/tutor at UT Health Science Center.
Seeing many students struggling in math, she decided to return to her area of expertise and passion, math. In 2010, she started Dyscalculia Services to provide Dyscalculia Training to teachers, parents, and tutors, assessments for students and adults, and to tutor students and adults.
She serves as co-chair of the Professional Advisory Board of the LDA, is adjunct faculty at Lesley University, a frequent speaker on Dyscalculia, consultant to various schools, and has developed a series of online courses to train Dyscalculia tutors.
