Description
Spelling abilities link to both reading and writing. Spelling is one of the most sensitive indicators of a learning disability and can be one of the most challenging abilities for students with dyslexia to develop. Many educational therapists are frustrated when they don't see a meaningful change in their students' spelling scores at annual testing time and want to find ways to improve their mediation. NILD’s newest workshop, Spelling: Linking Reading & Writing, enhances educators’ ability to develop students' concepts of spelling, understand spelling misconceptions, evaluate students' writing samples, and use a multi-modal structured literacy approach to building students' spelling abilities.
Sound boxes, word sums, lexical matrices, and etymology activities are key tools to help students make sense of spelling. The knowledge, content, and tools learned in this workshop are an excellent addition for educational therapists who provide Rx for Discovery Reading and/or Writing. Educational therapists can also learn new ways to incorporate building students' spelling abilities through meaning using NILD techniques and materials.
