WJ V Transition Update for NILD Educational Therapists

News & Updates

Assessment

Dear NILD Educational Therapists,

I want to take a moment to update you on our progress with NILD's transition to the Woodcock-Johnson V (WJ V) and to thank you for your continued diligence and partnership during this important season for NILD.

We are actively and thoughtfully preparing to incorporate the WJ V into NILD courses and workshops where appropriate. Our team is working carefully to ensure that this transition is well-developed, clearly communicated, and fully aligned with both best practices and our research commitments. Our current goal is to complete these updates and launch the revised WJ V training in the summer of 2027.

In the meantime, I want to reaffirm a few key points:

  • As previously communicated, all licensed NILD Educational Therapists who have already completed WJ IV training will receive the WJ V training update at no cost once it is released.
  • NILD Educational Therapists who completed Level I during the 2026–2027 training year will have access to WJ V ACH training prior to the summer 2027 Level II training. This timing ensures participants can complete the required preparation in advance and be fully ready to progress into Level II.
  • Riverside will continue to support the administration and scoring of the WJ IV for the next couple of years, allowing us a stable and appropriate window for transition.
  • Due to anticipated supply limitations, we recommend purchasing Student Test Booklets B and C, as Form A materials may become limited.

Regarding current testing practices:

  • We will soon provide a link for annual testing data collection for the 2025–2026 school year. For this year, testing should continue to use the WJ IV.
  • As part of our ongoing Gray Matter Literacy (GML) research, we will continue collecting data into the 2026–2027 school year. To preserve the integrity and comparability of our research, we strongly value as many annual assessments as possible being conducted using the WJ IV, allowing for meaningful comparison to the previous four years of collected data.

As you know, consistency in our assessment practices is essential to ensuring valid, reliable research outcomes and to strengthening the effectiveness of NILD Educational Therapy. Your commitment to these assessment tools plays a vital role in this work.

We are grateful for your patience as we prepare for this next phase. Our goal is not simply to adopt a new assessment, but to do so in a way that supports you well and maintains the excellence and integrity of NILD’s programs.

Thank you for your continued dedication to your students and to the mission of NILD.

With Appreciation,
Kristin Barbour, Ed.D.
